Understand when and how to support the player on the ball is crucial when trying to build up play and create goal scoring opportunities, in this drill players will get the opportunity to do just this.
In this drill players will develop their movement on and around the ball to create space, break lines and be an option to receive. Players will also work on when and where to play the ball to create goal scoring opportunities.
Teams and split 4v4 in central zone and 2v1 in end zones.
Offsides included.
Drill starts with the ball served into the central zone by the coach and receiving team starts the attack by keeping possession and finding the right time to play into their attacker.
Two attacking MF players can be released into end zone to make it 3v2 and create goal scoring opportunities. If defenders win back possession, they play into central zone for their team to initiate attack. MFs attackers can recover back.
Practice reset when ball goes dead.
Progression:
MF player can recover back to defend to make it 3v3.
Try to always have two passing options
Try to have a pivot player behind the ball and ahead of the ball to help connect play
Try to make forward runs quickly to break lines and support ahead of the ball
Stetch the opposition by getting high and wide, this will create space to move in to.
Try to make double movements to lose defenders and create space to receive.
Break line with movement off shoulders – on the blind side of defender
Play with pace & power to break line with a pass
Space – Make the zones bigger/smaller
Task – Include patterns into your drills, I.e., play into the 9 who sets it back for a 3rd player run
Equipment – Change size of goals
Players – Change the overloads/unloaded in each zone
