The defender must try to press and prevent the attacker from scoring in 1v1 situations
Coaching Objectives
In these 1v1 drills the defender must react to the starting position of the attacker and move to defend the dribble on goal.
Attack:
- Encourage the players to be creative in 1v1 situations.
- Use feints to help trick the defender and give the attacking player time and space.
- Use the outside of the foot to dribble.
- Shoot to one side of the goalkeeper
- Once the attacking player gets past the defender, he should cut in front of him to take him out of the play and have a clearer shot on goal.
Defence:
- In 1v1 situations, don't jump in to make it easy for the attacker to get past with a feint
- Body shape is key to balance and being able to turn with the attacker and force away from goal.
- Eye on the ball and any poor control or showing of the ball the defender can pounce
- Strong upper body to prevent the attacker holding the defender off
