We want to encourage players to play forward when the opportunity presents itself, and support play as quickly as possible. In this activity players will have a chance maintain possession in tight areas, and play forward as soon as the time is right
This drill will work on players ability to maintain possession under pressure, create supporting angles early, and play forward to the target player when the time is right and support the forward pass. The defenders will be looking at making play as predictable as possible and transition forward themselves when they win the ball.
2 teams of 3 players (this can be varied depending on numbers) with a target player in the end zones for both teams.
Practice starts always starts with the deepest target player who cant come out of the end zone, playing into the team in possession.
A team can score by completing 5 passes within the main area, or playing into their target player (who is on one touch) and supporting the play to score in the goal with one touch.
Defenders are not allowed to enter the end zone in the first instance so the one touch finish is unopposed, and players can use the deepest target player as a deep pivot player to help them maintain possession.
The team who scores maintains possession from the deepest target player. The game goes for 90 seconds each block and numbered can be varied depending on the squad size. Adjust the area to match the numbers you have.
1) One defender can enter the end zone when the target player has been played.
2) Take away the ability to play the deepest target player when in posession
3) The end zone is available for all players once the target player has been played.
4)Split the end zone into two halves, and put a restriction on that once the target player is played in one half the supporting player who is going to score must score in the other half (switch pass)
5) Can adjust timings, player numbers and number of passes for a goal to suit ability and numbers
Defenders are looking to stop the forward pass into the target player, and get organised in their 1 v 1s when the deepest pivot player is played by the team in possession.
